Brown Turkey

 

Probably the hardiest fig for outdoors, or inside the greenhouse. The most reliable cropping variety.

Brunswick

Larger & earlier than above, but not so prolific, needs a hot site. Ornamental deeply divided leaves.

White Marseilles white fleshed fig of good flavour, needing a warm site.

Chelsea [= King James]

Grown from cuttings from an old tree in the Chelsea Physick Garden. Very good flavour.

Jerusalem Large fruited form of Black Mulberry derived from a tree in Jerusalem.

HAWTHORNS

Crataegus arnoldiana

Well flavoured large red fruits; beautiful small tree to 4 metres.


Crataegus biflora

Glastonbury Thorn - famous winter & summer blooming thorn. A variety of our common native hawthorn. To 6 metres.


Crataegus durobrivensis

Hyybrid between two U.S. species, large flowers and fruits, up to 15mm. Hips persistent if not eaten and said to be well flavoured. To 6 metres.

Oriental Thorn - large yellow/red haws, grey/green leaves; small handsome tree.

 

Crataegus pedicellata

Scarlet Haw - Wide spreading tree; large bunches of scarlet fruit and rich autumn colour. To 6 metres.

 

Crataegus pinnatifida var. major

C. p. var major 'Big Golden Star'

Lobed leaves, large glossy crimson fruit to 3 cms., rich red autumn colour. To 4 metres.

 

as above, grown for market for its large red, not golden, fruit in central asia.

Crataegus prunifolia 'Splendens'

small broad tree, bright red 15 mm berries, shiny rich green leaves, orange autumn colour. Ornamental and productive.

 

Crataegus schraderiana

small slvery leaved tree; large purplish red fruits, the best for eating raw according to Ken Fern, and I agree with him.

 

Crat. viridis Winter King

small tree, glossy green leaves, large orange/red fruit, purple autumn colours.
